The app comes pre-loaded with nearly 50 lively, high-quality images to put together. These images cover the "spectrum" of still-life photos and nature scenes, buildings and machinery.
An interesting aspect of this application is that the puzzles to be presented by the easiest to most difficult. The first will be a breeze, but you'll probably be mumbling to themselves gradually as you unlock and the harder. You can choose, however, four different sizes for each puzzle ranges from 12 to 48 pieces. In addition to being able to get the size of the puzzle, there are three difficulty levels: Easy, Medium and Hard. These determine whether the pieces into place when they are in the right place, or if they show colored borders, to make it even easier to place them. Also, your score is based on the number of shots fired, so shooting a strategic small ball is often better than a pair of big ones.

The object is to make sure none of the falling balls, squares, or other objects collide with your cannon. Knocking the balls to the sides will keep you safe, but watch out for a rebound as one enemy ball collides with another. Your balls also bounce off the edges of the screen crazily. The resulting melee is chaotic--you'll have to have a quick trigger finger to stay alive.

• Lead your army into battle. Age of Conquest allows players the option of having their ruler take a direct hand in invading and conquering your neighbors. Doing so will result in a significant boost to attack and defense scores, but be careful--if your ruler is defeated, it's game over!

• Maintaining a large army can be quite a drain on your resources. Consider raising your taxes to pay your troops and keep them in the fight. There is a catch, however--increased taxes will reduce the morale of your population, which can lead to a reduced overall income in the long run.

• Fortify your defenses to stand fast against your enemies. Building watch towers on your borders will allow you to view the size of armies positioned in nearby areas, as well as the presence of any rulers. Build additional fortifications to add powerful defensive bonuses to your army.

Age of Conquest features two different game modes which change the win criteria for the game. In the default, Standard setting of the game, you must win by capturing the majority of all provinces on the map, or by defeating all enemy rulers. In World Domination mode, you will not be victorious until you have conquered every last province on the entire map. In both modes, additional territory may be gained through diplomatic means during gameplay, affecting your final score to varying degrees.

Play a Quick Game or take some time and complete a Hunting Trip. A Quick Game consists of four rounds: 3 hunting rounds and a bonus round where you shoot at squirrels, rabbits, or prairie dogs. A Hunting Trip is a deeper experience in which you must hunt the five largest animals in the location in order to unlock the next stage in the game.

As you complete hunts, you earn points that can be used to improve your hunting skills. Learn the skill levels behind each weapon and which are less likely to frighten the other animals. Tag an animal to see its statistics on the GPS map--this will help you to avoid the less valuable kills and concentrate on the heavier animals. Discover which animals to take aim on--shooting a male deer will get you points but shooting a doe will earn you nothing. Additional gameplay mechanics include:

The app description above does a good job of describing the game in its entirety: connect a chain of 3 or more matching animal faces by swiping your finger, there are 3 modes of play, and OpenFeint allows you to submit your high scores to compare globally with other players.

The game is challenging, colorful and fairly addictive for young kids (starting at age 5?) to adults; you could easily end up playing this an hour or more past your bedtime. Game play is smooth, no lagging, and completely stable in my experience. Sounds are top notch, including the soothing background African jungle noises. The game responded accurately to the swiping of my big thumb, even though I'm not wild about this type of touchscreen game, in which your finger covers key elements, making it hard to see what you're doing.

If you think larger animal tiles would be easier to select or view, try the non-HD Safari! version which is also free today (click this link: Safari!). It's identical except there are 6 X 6 tiles versus a 7 X 7 grid.

Every time you create a chain, the chain disappears, the animals above drop down to fill in the vacant spots, and new random animals fill in the vacated spots at the top. This is where strategy comes in - maneuver animals by taking away chains below, and thereby creating new longer chains. This is more easily practiced in Endless mode as opposed to the frenzied time pressure of the other modes.

The modes of play cater to two types of people: "Endless" mode for those who don't like time constraints, e.g. who like regular chess, and "Survivor" and "Time Attack" modes for those who like the thrill of time limits, e.g. who like speed chess.

Endless mode truly is endless - you just keep adding points as long as you want to keep playing, so it's not that challenging as far as accumulating points is concerned. Even when you think you've boxed yourself into a corner, and there are no possible chains left (of 3 or more animals), the board just re-shuffles and lets you play on for eternity. This mode is good for allowing you to slow down and practice strategy for the other modes. It's only challenging if you make it your goal to create longer and longer chains and thereby earn points faster.

After frustrating trial and error in Endless mode, I found that you have just over 31 seconds to finish connecting a chain after starting one; after that, you just get credit for as far as you got. This is plenty of time even for long chains, so don't dawdle.

You earn more points the longer the chain. In fact, each additional animal increases the points PER animal by 10, so the total points for the chain increase non-linearly and more like exponentially. So 3 animals earn 3 X 30 = 90 points, 4 animals earn 4 X 40 = 160 points, and so on. I verified this all the way to a chain of 19 critters (19 X 190 = 3610 points), which is fun and challenging to accomplish considering the board has 49 animals at a time.

Another way to view this is that the points per additional animal in the chain increase by 20 each time; thus the RATE of increase is constant. So a chain of 3 (the minimum allowed) is 90 points, a chain of 4 is 70 more or 160 points, a chain of 5 is 90 more or 250 points, a chain of 6 is 110 more or 360 points, and so on. To go from a chain of 18 to 19, add 370 additional points to get 3610.

It's a Fish-Eat-Fish World

Soon, however, you'll be caught up in Grow's addicting gameplay. Start out in Adventure mode to get a feel for the game. Your mission is quite simple--eat the small and medium-sized fish and avoid the big, ugly ones such as the puffer and angler fish. It's pretty easy to spot the bad guys because they sport red warning rings. The more you eat, the bigger you get.

A bar at the top of the screen gauges your progress--when it's full, you move on to the next level. You have a choice between Normal and Advanced difficulty settings, so you can challenge yourself as you get bigger and better.

Survival of the Fittest

Once you're feeling confident, it's time to switch to Survival mode. You begin life as a tiny egg in a cramped jar. Your goal is the deep blue sea. Advance through 64 different levels and seven fun environments by collecting points and gold coins. A multiplier effect helps you score big.

Grab the floating power-ups to give yourself bonus skills and attributes, or buy them in the official store with your coins. Record your high score for each level and share your achievements on Facebook. If you're a whale of a player you might swim your way up the global scoreboard.

Don't worry, the asteroids won't hurt you, but you will face a different challenge--your enemy just loves to grab those gems too. Make sure you reach them first, and shoot them quickly, or they will be transformed into much more dangerous foes.

As a welcome respite from the hard-core destruction, you get the chance to gain bonus points by completing the challenge waves. Aliens will fly in formation around your ship while you attempt to execute a complete wipe-out. It's not easy, but getting the right upgrades will greatly aid your mission. During the challenges your ship gains temporary indestructibility.
